Genesis 2:15-17

The Original Conspiracy Theory

Genesis 2:15-17

The Lord God placed the man in the Garden of Eden to tend and watch over it. But the Lord God warned him, "You may freely eat the fruit of every tree in the garden - except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If you eat its fruit, you are sure to die.

"Sin is unwillingness to trust that what God wants for me is only my deepest happiness" - St Ignatius of Loyola

Genesis 3:1-7

The serpent was the shrewdest of all the wild animals the Lord God had made. One day he asked the woman, "Did God really say you must not eat the fruit from any of the trees in the garden?" Of course we may eat fruit from the trees in the garden," the woman replied. "It's only the fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden that we are not allowed to eat. God said, 'You must not eat it or even touch it; if you do, you will die.'" "You won't die!" the serpent replied to the woman. "God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like God, knowing both good and evil." The woman was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it, too. At that momnt their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shamed at their nakedness. So they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves.

  • Humility
      • Isaiah 55:8-9   For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the Lord. "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts."
      • Proverbs 11:2   When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.
      • Proverbs 9:10   The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
      • 1 Corinthians 13:12   Now we see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflections in a mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely.
  • Hope
      • 1 Peter 3:15   But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.
      • Hebrews 6:19   We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.
      • Romans 12:12   Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying.
      • Psalm 42:5-6   Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again - my Savior and my God!
      • Romans 15:4-6   Such things were written in the Scriptures long ago to teach us. And the Scriptures give us hope and encouragement as we wait patiently for God's promises to be fulfilled. May God, who gives this patience and encouragement, help you live in complete harmony with each other, as is fitting for followers of Christ Jesus. Then all of you can join together with one voice giving praise and glory to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Conclusion:

Psalm 23   The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His Name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
