Living in the Light

Living in the Light

Part 2

Ephesians 5:1-11

Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children. Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God. Let there be no sexual immorality, impurity, or greed among you. Such sins have no place among God's people. Obscene stories, foolish talk, and coarse jokes-these are not for you. Instead, let there be thankfullness to God. You can be sure that no immoral, impure, or greedy person will inherit the Kingdom of Christ and of God. For a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world. Don't be fooled by those who try to excuse these sins, for the anger of God will fall on all who disobey him. Don't participate in the things othese people do. For once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of light! For this light within you produces only what is good and right and true. Carefully determine what pleases the Lord. Take no part in the worthless deeds of evil and darkness; instead, expose them.

Intro:

Matthew 5:14-16   You are the light of the world-like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.

  • Live to Be Imitators of God
      • Ephesians 5:1   Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children.
      • 1 Corinthians 11:1   And you should imitate me, just as I imitate Christ.
  • Live With Love
      • Ephesians 5:2   Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God.
      • Matthew 16:24   Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross, and follow me."
      • 1 Corinthians 13:3   If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it; but if I didn't love others, I would have gained nothing.
  • Live a Thankful Life
      • Ephesians 5:4   Obscene stories, foolish talk, and coarse jokes-these are not for you. Instead, let there be thankfulness to God.
      • Colossians 3:17   And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father.
      • 1 Thessalonians 5:18   Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.
  • Live in God's Light
      • Ephesians 5:6-8   Don't be fooled by those who try to excuse these sins, for the anger of God will fall on all who disobey him. Don't participate in the things these people do. For once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of light!
      • Galatians 4:9   So now that you know God (or should I say, now that God knows you), why do you want to go back again and become slaves once more to the weak and useless spiritual principles of this world?
      • Luke 11:35-36   Make sure that the light you think you have is not actually darkness. If you are filled with light, with no dark corners, then your whole life will be radiant, as though a floodlight were filling you with light.
  • Live Focusing of Good
      • Ephesians 5:9-10   For this light within you produces only what is good and right and true. Carefully determine what pleases the Lord.
      • Matthew 5:14-16   You are the light of the world-like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.
      • Galatians 6:9   So let's not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don't give up.
